Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon 2021

Run the world’s highest marathon from the Everest Base Camp to Namche Bazaar in the well established Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. The annual event starts at Everest Base Camp at 5364m, and was first held in 2003. The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon will be held on 29th of May 2021 in tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s first ascent of Mount Everest, via South East Ridge, on May 29 1953.

15th May 2021 - Arrival Day, Day 1

Mount Everest Marathon Itinerary (Provisional and subject to Change)

Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Kathmandu. Complimentary airport transfers are provided.

16th May 2021 - 16th May 2021, days 2 to 12

Day 2: An early start for the flight to the mountain airfield at Lukla. From here, it is just a short and easy walk, largely downhill, to the first lodge at Phakding (2610m) beside the Dudh Kosi River. Meals BLD.

Day 3: After a leisurely breakfast, you will make an easy hike, mostly downhill to your first lodge. 3 hours. BLD.

Day 4: You pass the entrance to the Khumbu National Park before dropping down to the river. You cross and re-cross the river before making a final steep climb to the lodge in the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar (3400m).

Distance – Approximately 11 kms walking, with 1150 metres of ascent and 300 metres of descent. 5-6 hours with stops. Meals BLD.

Day 5: A rest day at Namche for acclimatisation. Options for acclimatisation walks to a viewpoint for Everest and spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Nuptse and Lhotse. You will spend a second night at the lodge in Namche.

Distance – Acclimatisation walk approx 7 kms, with 400 metres of ascent and descent. 2 hours. Meals BLD.

Day 6: Today, you hike up out of Namche to one of the Sherpa villages that is situated to the north. Overnight in Kumjung at an elevation of 3790 metres, with views of Everest and Ama Dablam.

Distance – Approximately 4 kms walking, with 450 metres of ascent and 130 metres of descent. 2 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 7: The trail now follows the Imja Khola (river) to reach Thyangboche and its monastery, which is located on a ridge below the impressive north ridge of Kang Taiga. You then drop down to overnight at Deboche at 3700 metres.

Distance – Approximately 8 kms walking, with 650 metres of ascent 700 metres of descent. 4-5 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 8: You trek via the last permanent habitation in the Khumbu at Pangboche to the seasonal settlement of Dingboche (4350m) at the entrance to the Khumbu Valley.

Distance – Approximately 10 kms walking, with 900 metres of ascent and 300 metres of descent. 4-5 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 9: A rest day at Dingboche, with plenty of opportunities for acclimatisation hikes or easy training runs into the upper Imja Valley.

Distance – Potential acclimatisation walk 9 kms, with 400 metres of ascent and descent. 3 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 10: Continuing on the main trail you trek via Dugla and then beside the Khumbu Glacier to the lodge at Lobuche (4910m).

Distance – Approximately 9 kms walking, with 650 metres of ascent and 60 metres of descent. 4 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 11: You walk beside the Khumbu Glacier and cross a tributary dry glacier to reach the yak pastures at Gorak Shep (5140m).

Distance – Approximately 5 kms walking, with 280 metres of ascent and 40 metres of descent. 2 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 12: The lodge is close to the foot of Kala Patar (5500m) and you make an early morning ascent of this classic Everest viewpoint, then spend the afternoon at rest.

Distance – Acclimatisation walk approximately 4 kms, with 500 metres of ascent and descent. 2 hours with stops. Meals BLD

27th May 2021 - 28 May 2021, days 13 & 14

Day 13: Today, you trek up to Everest Base Camp, crossing moraine and hiking alongside and then on the Khumbu Glacier. You set up our own basecamp close to the camps of the various climbing expeditions on the mountain.

Distance – Approximately 4 kms walking, with 150 metres of ascent and 50 metres of descent. 2 hours with stops. Meals BLD

Day 14: A day at Everest Base Camp for rest and final preparation for the race. You spend your second and final night under canvas. Meals BLD

29th May 2021 - Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon 2021, day 15

Day 15: Race day

The Mount Everest Marathon will start at 7 am to allow the slowest participants to complete the route in daylight. There will be full marshalling, drinks stations and medical back-up and supervision. Overnight in a lodge at Namche Bazaar.

Distance – Approximate race stats: 42 kms, with 1000 metres of ascent and 2600 metres of descent. Meals BLD

30th May 2021 - 3rd June 2021, days 16 to 20

Day 16: Rest in the morning, then make the easy trek down valley to Monjo. Meals BLD

Day 17: Mostly downhill today following the fall of the Dudh Kosi river, but there’s a sting in the tail as you make the final short climb to Lukla. Meals BLD

Day 18: Taking a morning flight to Kathmandu, you will check in at the group hotel and have plenty of time after lunch for further sightseeing or shopping. Meals BLD

Day 19: A half day city tour is provided today in Kathmandu. Time for sightseeing and souvenir buying in the colourful market streets of the Nepalese capital. In the evening you will attend the Everest Marathon celebration party! Meals B.

Day 20: Complimentary airport transfers are provided after breakfast. Depart Kathmandu. Meals B

How to get there

AIRPORT

Kathmandu airport to just under 5km away from the city center.

CAR

The easiest way is to take a taxi from the airport which is 20 – 30 minutes traffic pending. When you exit the airport, you will see a lot of taxi outside waiting, or you can also pre-book inside the airport.
