Open water and wild swimming has enjoyed a surge in popularity recently. Far from content with doing laps in the local indoor pool, many are now looking to challenge themselves in oceans, lakes, and rivers.
Marathon and open water swimming has been part of the Olympics since 2008 and of the swimming world championships since 1992.
Events such as Swim Serpentine in London, Vansbrosimningen in Sweden and Trygfonden Copenhagen Swim have helped grow interest in the sport.
