In 2018 the Giro started in the centre of Jerusalem, therefore marking the first time the Giro d’Italia, or any grand tour, started outside of Europe. Simon Yates had the lead from most of the race before Chris Froome took the victory in the last few stages by overturning the deficit between him and 2017 winner Tom Dumoulin.
