For 40 years Ron Hill has been one of Britain’s most iconic marathon runners. He has run every day since 20th December 1964, and continues to do so at 72 years of age.
Ron has clocked up 15,000 days running over 45 years – a world record streak! For 26.6 of these years he even ran twice a day (once on Sundays) without ever missing a run. During his impressive running career Ron has competed in more than 2200 races in 100 different countries.
His most famous sporting achievements took place in 1970 when we became the first ever Britain to win the Boston Marathon. Following his success in Boston, Ron went on to win Gold at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, recording a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 28 seconds.
Ron Hill Sports opened its first shop, in Hyde, Cheshire in 1975, the town where the brand is still based today. The opening of a retail outlet followed the early success of a mail order business, which Ron Hill ran from his home.
Ron went on to make numerous achievements in the sports clothing industry too. He was the first person to introduce synthetic fibres to running clothes, and he innovated ‘wrap-over split’ running shorts and the use of mesh in running vests. He designed the first Union Jack running shorts, and developed the best selling running pant in the world.
