Event Info
Richmond Park is the largest open space in London covering almost 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres), and is home to a huge array of wildlife, including 1000’s of deer. The roads within the park will be closed for the day and will provide a stunning course for The London Duathlon, with secluded grassland and woods. At certain points the incredible views of Central London are the only reminder of how close it is to the centre of the nation’s capital city.
The Race
All ability levels will be catered for as there are two race distances to choose from. The Fun distance involves a 5km run, 10km bike and a final 5km run while the Challenge event involves a 10km run, 20km bike and a final run of 5km.
Ultra Distance
Launched for 2010, the London Duathlon now offers a challenge that will appeal to the thousands of athletes now focussing on longer distance racing. The 20km : 80km : 10km event is one of the few opportunities to race at these distances in the UK and will be integrated into the existing Challenge and Fun distance events for the London Duathlon.
The Ultra will start the days racing beginning with 2 laps of the Park for the first run, followed by 7 laps on the bike and a further full lap of the Park to finish. Places in the event will be available on a first come, first served basis and limited by the route capacity. Open to any participants over 17 years old, there will be a time limit of 6hrs 15 mins to complete the distance. Below is an estimate of the average times to complete the course.
With the race around the stunning Richmond Park, there will be a focal point near to Roehampton gate for spectators which will enable them to support you and cheer you on from one place for all three legs of the race! The start, finish and transition are all located near to Roehampton gate, and should make for great spectating – So make sure you bring all your friends and family along for the day.
Spectators
There will be plenty of spectator access, and the venue will provide a great day out for friends and family. Richmond Park is the largest open space in London covering almost 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres), and is home to a huge array of wildlife.
The Bike
This is harder to view given the speed of the competitors and access for spectators on the closed roads. We would suggest that spectators view from the roadside near to Roehampton Gate. The cycle leg heads clockwise around the park, starting from the Roehampton Gate. The bike is a lapped course so spectators will have the opportunity to see you several times depending on the distance you’re doing.
The Run
There are viewing points all along the run course from the transition exit. The run leg heads anti-clockwise around the park. Spectators should check the route to the finish so as not to miss you crossing the line! The bike and run are lapped courses so spectators will have the opportunity to see you several times depending on the distance you’re doing.
