Gran Fondo is a popular timed cycling event stemming from Italy, the biggest and most popular Gran Fondos are Nove Colli and Dolomiti, so the words New York and Gran Fondo are not normally used in the same sentence, until now. The Gran Fondo New York on May 20th 2012 will have thousands of competitors from all around the World taking part over 105 miles.

If New York drivers who like to cruise the streets in their SUVs are wondering what happened to the serious cyclists on Sunday, no, they haven't been rounded up by the cops once and for all. Thousands of them took off by their own free will early in the morning to take part in the inaugural Gran Fondo New York, a large, competitive group ride that exited Manhattan over the George Washington Bridge and wound up the backroads of New York and New Jersey for 100 miles.

Local cyclists said Sunday’s race was the equivalent of the New York Marathon for the biking world, except the race was open to anyone, regardless of experience or qualifications. The winner, however, would qualify for the Union Cycliste Internationale Amateur World Championship.
